India has taken a major step forward in enhancing its maritime and nuclear deterrence capabilities with the induction of its third indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridman, into the Indian Navy.
The submarine officially entered service on Friday after successfully completing several months of rigorous sea trials. This development marks a significant milestone in India’s strategic defense program, particularly under its nuclear triad framework.

A Key Addition to India’s Nuclear Triad :
INS Aridman is part of India’s ambitious SSBN (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear) program. The country’s first such submarine, INS Arihant, was commissioned in 2016, establishing India’s underwater nuclear strike capability. It was followed by INS Arighat, which joined the fleet in August 2024.
With the addition of INS Aridman, India further strengthens its ability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea—completing and reinforcing its nuclear deterrence posture.
Advanced Capabilities and Firepower :
INS Aridman is equipped with advanced missile systems, significantly boosting India’s long-range strike capabilities. Key features include:
- Capability to carry long-range K-4 ballistic missiles
- Ability to launch K-15 ‘Sagarika’ missiles
- Potential integration with future K-5 missile systems
- Enhanced stealth and endurance for deep-sea operations
These capabilities allow the submarine to remain undetected while maintaining a credible second-strike capability—an essential element of nuclear deterrence.
Strategic Importance :
India’s Defense Minister, Rajnath Singh, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating on social media: “Not just words, but power—Aridman.” His statement reflects the growing emphasis on strengthening India’s defense preparedness amid evolving global security dynamics.
With INS Aridman now operational, India joins an elite group of nations possessing nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, including the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, and China.
Boost to Regional Stability :
The induction of INS Aridman is expected to enhance India’s strategic deterrence, contribute to maintaining regional balance, and reinforce peace through strength. By expanding its underwater nuclear capabilities, India ensures greater security against potential threats while maintaining its commitment to responsible nuclear doctrine.
This milestone underscores India’s growing technological and defense capabilities, positioning it as a formidable maritime power in the Indo-Pacific region.
